Friday we went out to the Kauai Lighthouse. It was built in 1913 and boasts the largest clamshell lens in the world. The lens was hand-ground by French workers back in 1912 then shipped out here for $12,000 (a lot of money at that time!). The past few decades, however, the lens is no longer used in favor of electrically powered beacons, and the lighthouse has become a tourist monument. Another nice thing about the lighthouse is that there are tons of incredible birds that fly around the gulf where the lighthouse resides, including the 7-foot wingspan but only 3-pounds heavy "frigatebird." We were lucky enough to see 4 different ones, and I've included a photo of three females together in this post.
Yesterday morning we hit the Hanalei Farmer's Market. One vendor gave Lucia a banana, then she wanted two more after I bought some four our family. We got plenty of fruit, including soursup, papaya, guava, and bananas, and some broad beans, tomatoes, and onions. There was some nice looking kale and squash, but we'll wait for the Tuesday market to see if Alex is feeling more up to those veggies.
In the afternoon yesterday we went to a nice beach. The weather was cool and overcase - perfect for us! We are not looking to get tan (we didn't get there till 4 pm), and it was so nice to actually hang out at the water without sweating up a storm. We watched Lu play in the sand, though she still is afraid of the water. And I was able to get in to my waist, though I'm not all too keen on real ocean swimming, given the pregnancy and all.
We've gotten into a kind of morning routine - Lu wakes up with the roosters at the crack of dawn, and one of us gets up and makes French Toast. Then we turn on the terrific Miyazaki movie "Spirited Away" (the only cartoon in the movie library here - we're on screening #4 as I type), and hang out until we're ready to go out. This morning we'll be off to Church at St Williams in town at 9 am.
Here are our pics! Enjoy!

I'm glad everyone is starting to feel better. Enjoy the rest of your time.
