Anyway, they prescribed these antibiotic drops. Which, if you've ever tried putting drops into a kid's eyes, it is HORRIBLE. She would kick, wiggle, bat her arms, turn her head from side to side, and squeeze her eyes shut. All while telling whomever was the unlucky drop instigator to "go away." Poor Alex got the brunt of it, since he was the best dropper. "Go Away, Daddy!" It is enough to break your heart!! We got a cream prescription the next day over the phone, thinking it might be better, but that one you have to squeeze into the lower lid and it causes the eye to become watery and vision to blur for about 10 minutes. So we elected to stick with the infernal drops.
On Friday, despite every 2-3 hour dropping (except during sleep), Lucia's eyes were still goopy and she developed a fever around mid-morning. So we took her to the doctor again, and were prescribed antibiotics. She's been on them since Friday night - every 8 hours, 3x/day for 10 days. The doctor said that it takes about 36 hours for them to kick in, and to give children's Tylenol every ~4 hours. This does reduce her fever temporarily and return her to some sort of spirit, but even now, Sunday night, she still has a fever. So we think we'll probably be back to the doctor's office tomorrow. At the very least, the pinkeye is now gone. Thank goodness for that, those drops were painful for everyone!
In the middle of all this, Alex's parents flew in for a 36 hour visit on Friday night after 9 pm (they left this morning at 9 am!). We felt bad that their trip coincided with an unfortunate level of illness in the family, but it was nice to see them and we even managed to take a short walk through the Rose Gardens with everyone. They also graciously stayed home with poor Lucia (who basically watched movies all weekend) so Alex & I could take Magdalena to a happy hour some friends hosted for us pre-departure. Thanks Tom & Sue!
The other good thing is that, so far at least, Magdalena, Alex, and I are all healthy. I am hoping that we all avoid whatever this illness is - especially little Lena. We're praying that the breastmilk goodies will prevent her from getting sick. And at least we're getting through it now, rather than in a few weeks when we get on the plane!! Still, it's no fun to be sick!

Sadly, we totally forgot to take pictures of Tom & Sue with the girls until LITERALLY just before they left. We girls had just gotten out of bed (in case you can't tell!). And Tom is a bit ... concerned about getting out the door!

I hope Lucia feels better this week!!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you've heard this before or not but for regular pinkeye breast milk is supposed to be curative. :)
ReplyDeleteAlso with those drops, we were told that you can drop them in the corners of squished shut toddler eyes and hold the child's head still till they open their eyes.
